Finally we are settled enough in our routine to begin telling you the story of our Journey.   After months of preparation, we had the official launch on Friday, January 27th at San Diego High School, which opened in 1882.  You can learn more about the very interesting history of the school with this link:

Today’s San Diego High is six smaller schools on the same campus with a total student body of 3,000 students.  Mrs. Arlene Harris, who teaches Government and Economics, included the Citizenship Counts curriculum in preparing her students for and planning the beautiful and moving Naturalization Ceremony on Friday morning.   You can read more about the ceremony in a wonderful article from the San Diego Union:

We are extremely grateful to Mrs. Harris for all of her efforts to make our launch such an incredible experience.

After the Naturalization Ceremony during which 50 men and women of diverse ages and backgrounds became American citizens, there was a launch ceremony featuring Bill Walton talking with the students about his admiration for Gerda, about good citizenship and about staying in school so that they can fulfill their hopes and dreams.   His remarks were inspiring.  Gerda and John also addressed the students with wonderful words from their hearts.

Following this emotional morning, John, Tyler and Bill Walton began a fifty mile bike trip that took them from San Diego to Coronado Island, where John and Tyler each stepped into the waters of the Pacific Ocean – the beginning of our Journey that will take us from Sea To Shining Sea!

Had some perspective from 13000 ft in Colorado last week and remembered your mention of the very inspiring journey you were planning. So exciting to see that you have got started. I envy you but not sure the joints would hold up. All the very best! Jack
